It’s easy to see why; this American-born company has been an industry leader for decades, offering a diverse assortment of powersports vehicles to meet riders’ needs.

Founded By Outdoorsmen

 

Following the end of World War II, the owners of Hetteen Hoist & Derrick were primarily known for manufacturing farm tools and machinery. However, they were also avid outdoor enthusiasts who enjoyed exploring their native Minnesota, even during the wintertime. A reliable form of snow transport was needed, which led to the Hetteen Brothers, Edgar and Allan, and their friend David Johnson, developing the first functional snowmobile. Word soon spread in the area, and demand for their snowmobiles soon outpaced their prior business.

 

Further Expansion

 

Polaris® Industries got its current name by 1960, from the official name for the North Star, long used by adventurers as a navigational aid. The company switched its focus from utilitarian transport vehicles to recreational and sport vehicles. Following a market boom, the owners sold Polaris® Industries to Textron, which allowed for expansion in the 1970s. However, this was also the decade when a major economic downturn hit, and Polaris® wasn’t spared, although they did manage to survive when dozens of other manufacturers of snowmobiles went under.

 

Rebirth

 

During a slowdown in the 1980s, Textron was prepared to pull out, and then-president of Polaris®, W. Hall Wendel, Jr., elected to not sell the company. Instead, he bought out Polaris® from Textron and took a mere hundred employees to start anew. They paid their debt to Textron well in advance, which allowed the company to focus on innovation and improving their lineup. This allowed Polaris® to expand into the all-terrain vehicle market in 1984, which had previously been claimed by Japanese manufacturers. In 1990, Polaris® became the first big United States powersports manufacturer to dive into the personal watercraft market.
