Numatix Clutch System on New Expedition - What It Means for Northern Ontario Riders

Quiet Power: The New NUMATIX Clutch on the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION
At Rivercity Motorsports in Sault Ste. Marie, we’re always excited when Polaris delivers real innovation that makes time on the trail better. The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION just got a major upgrade with NUMATIX Controlled CVT — an industry-first pneumatic (air-controlled) continuously variable transmission that changes how this capable side-by-side drives.
What Is NUMATIX?
Traditional CVTs rely on centrifugal force, springs, and weights to shift ratios. NUMATIX keeps that proven mechanical foundation but adds an electronically controlled air actuator that actively manages clutch pressure in real time.
A dedicated control module monitors rider inputs, vehicle speed, load, and terrain conditions up to 200 times per second. It uses onboard compressed air to fine-tune the drive clutch, holding the engine exactly where it needs to be for the situation.
The result is a smarter, more refined driving experience without giving up the responsive power and simplicity riders expect from a belt-driven system.
The Biggest Benefits You’ll Notice
Much quieter cabin Cruising RPM drops dramatically — about 45% lower at 30 mph in testing. That translates to up to a 40% reduction in cabin noise (as much as 9 dB quieter). Long trail rides, conversations, and music become far more enjoyable inside the fully enclosed, HVAC-equipped cab.
Smoother and more controlled power NUMATIX delivers predictable power as conditions change. It improves low-speed control for technical terrain or trailer loading, maintains strong belt grip under load (climbing, towing, rock crawling), and still provides confident acceleration when you ask for it. Polaris reports the 2027 model reaches 50 mph roughly one second quicker than the previous generation.
Drive modes that work with the transmission
- Comfort Mode prioritizes smooth engagement and reduced noise — ideal for long rides and relaxed cruising.
- Standard Mode balances comfort and responsiveness.
- Sport Mode turns off the pneumatic assist so you get the most aggressive throttle response and traditional CVT feel when you want maximum performance.
Bonus onboard air The system includes a pump and air tank. You’ll find an air chuck ready for inflating tires, clearing dust, or powering accessories. It’s a practical extra that adventure riders will appreciate in the field.
Built for Northern Ontario Riding
Whether you’re exploring the trails around Sault Ste. Marie, heading into the Algoma highlands, or using the XPEDITION for work and weekend adventures, NUMATIX makes the machine more refined without sacrificing capability. Quieter cruising means less fatigue on longer days. Better clutch control under load means more confidence when the terrain gets technical or you’re hauling gear.
The 2027 XPEDITION XP and ADV models with NUMATIX are offered in 2- and 5-passenger NorthStar configurations and begin arriving at dealers this summer.
